We tutor 1:1 English to students from aged 5 years and up. Regardless of level or exam board, our tutors closely follow the school syllabus so that they can support your child across all language and literature modules.
Generally speaking, English GCSE students need support with their English Language and Literature. For the GCSE English Language exam, your child will study creative reading and writing which includes one literature fiction text and descriptive or narrative writing. Your child will study written and reading comprehension comprehensions centred around audience and writers' viewpoints and perspectives. GCSE Language students will be tutored on a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature and literary non-fiction as well as reviews and journalism. Students will also study the use of the English language including critical reading, comprehension and spoken language.
GCSE English Literature students will study Shakespeare, 19th century novel/drama/prose, contemporary drama, modern text prose and poetry (both seen and unseen). Special attention will be paid to comprehension and critical analysis as well as essay planning and grammatical skills.
Having a tutor who can support your child to fill in knowledge gaps and who have experience of the syllabus, module guidelines and grade boundaries, is greatly reassuring. Syllabi, examinations and assessments are susceptible to changing frameworks and so parents and pupils will have peace of mind that we are up to date with these changes.
Depending on level and subject modules, most English Language ad English Literature tuition lessons will follow the following format:
1. Lesson recap – from last week’s class in case there are any follow-up questions
2. Literature study – we’ll study literary texts as outlined above
3. Past exam paper practice (if applicable) – we’ll study past papers and exam techniques to consolidate revision strategies and essay planning
4. Homework – there will be homework most weeks and students will be given access to the lesson resources, handouts and message board corrections made in class.
